Movie Quotes applied to Software Engineering... "I've got a bad feeling about this" from Star Wars!

I finally got round to watching the new Star Wars (that's what it's like having 2 kids at home, babysitters are at a premium!!!), and (no spoilers here) but I was interested to see the following line being muttered again during the film! It reminded me of a series of blog posts I done a while back around famous movie quotes that have been said in films and applying them to Software Engineering/Testing... This particular quote has been said in every single Star Wars film so far! (Star Wars trivia for you there!) But for the purpose of this blog post, how does it apply to Software Engineering? 


Well, as Testers on a development team/project we get to see things that others perhaps don't get to see, we get to speak to everybody about the product that is being developed, we see it from a technical standpoint, from a business standpoint and from a customer standpoint, we really are in a truly unique position, and this is one of the things I love most about Testing.

As a result of this position, we can often find ourselves saying or thinking the above, which is great, providing you have evidence to back it up of course, nobody wants to work with a Debbie Downer!



If you have evidence to back up your particular feelings about a product, then it's perfectly fine to say something like the above, and hopefully people will listen to you and you can start to illustrate just why you have the bad feelings and how you can alleviate them and turn them into positive feelings!

    Star Wars is an amazing movie. But I haven't observed this dialogue in all so far. I love these kind of movies. I'm also doing a degree program in Graphic Design.

No real point to this post other than I have had the song stuck in my head and figured I could change it slightly and quite easily make QA is Awesome! Oh and I haven't even seen the movie all the way through! But for some reason that song is incredibly catchy! Not much point to this post in fact, just thought I'd put it out there :)

Measuring QA Key Skills and Competencies

I have been thinking about how I can help encourage self improvement within my team, as I understand it, everyone wants to improve, it's just that often there are a number of things that hold people back. I believe one of these things that hold people back are around identifying skills that they are perhaps weak in or that they could/should improve on. So I thought about how I can help tackle that problem. One solution that I want to try with people is to identify the key skills for a QA, what key skills should every QA have, or at least what key skills make up a good QA?
